Quirky, amusing 'Young India Records'

Time capsules from a bygone era

A pre-independence Gramophone records company under the banner of 'Young India Records' just made a huge collection of its recordings, public in digital form. These have been released by the British Library publicly on its website's Sounds archives (link below).

Upon trawling through the entire collection of 1427 records, I found some rather amusing and intriguing ones, which I shall share now. 

A speech by Subhas Chandra Bose

A rather interesting piece of history captured here, with Bose delivering a call to the nation, in Queen's English with a hint of Bengali accent which was the norm it seems during those British era days. He is canvassing for Congress after the 1937 elections probably, as he mentions its victories at one point. Also mentions student movements in Russia, France and Italy!

A Congress election jingle 'Viceroy milan ko jaana'

Now this is really interesting. A Congress election song that asks voters to select Congress, so they can get to meet the Viceroy !! And amusingly, it is set to the tune of 'Piya Milan ko Jaana', a Bombay film song, which must have been a smash hit at that time. Well played, I guess, given how strict the censors were at the time for any political themes.

A radio play on Jahangir

This is a short radio play on the fabled justice of Jahangir, the Mughal emperor. The whole play is in verses and presents interesting themes, where the emperor has to take a call on justice when his own wife Nur Jahan is involved in a crime against a non-Muslim subject.

Meri Wafaayein yaad karoge

This ghazal seems similar to one by one of the lesser known poets : Mohammad Deen Taseer, which was re-worked by Sameer in 90s film Sainik (starring Akshay Kumar). Some of the words seem to have been changed in both versions from the original ghazal. In anycase this is performed by a singer named Manohar Kapoor.

Some fascinating insights into caste and linguistics... Sanskrit and Prakrits, how caste hierarchies impact a 'literary' language and how they get implanted on the language of populace.


१. मागधी प्राकृत के साथ संस्कृत आचार्यों के दोयम दर्जे का व्यवहार क्यूंकि वे समाज के हाशिये के जातियों की भाषा थी, का उदाहरण संस्कृत नाटकों में मिलता है, जिसमे निम्न श्रेणी के पात्र प्राकृत बोलते हैं, मां प्राकृत बोलती है और बेटा संस्कृत !
२. वैदिक आर्यों के लिए मगध क्षेत्र ‘अनार्यों’ की धरती थी, जिसके वासी ‘कीकट’ थे, उनकी भाषा ‘कर्णकटु’ और ‘कर्मनाशा’ नदी आर्य भूमि की सरहद, जिसे पार करना निषेध था | समय के साथ जनसँख्या दबाव में उन्हें बढ़ना पड़ा, कर्मनाशा भी पार हुई, कीकट प्रदेश में ‘पवित्र’ स्थलों की स्थापना मजबूरन करनी पड़ी | शायद इसी सेलेक्टिव ऑक्यूपेशन का साम्राज्यवादी तरीका बाद में अंग्रेजों ने भी अपनाया |
३. भोजपुरी कृषि और श्रम संस्कृति की भाषा है, कामगारों, किसानों, मजदूरों की | यदि आधुनिक युग के संयत्र दरकिनार कर दें, तो कृषि संस्कृति का मुख्य आधार बैल है, जिसे रंग, आयु, सींग पर वर्गीकृत करने वाले कई विशेषण प्रचलित हैं : ललका, उजरका, करिआवा, धावर, गोल...
४. श्रम संस्कृति में सुबह के महत्व के कारण, सुबह और उसके आस पास के समय के लिए बहुत शब्द हैं : अन्हमुन्हारे, भोर, भोरहरिये, किरिन फुटले, बिहाने, फह फटले, झलफलाहे, सेकराहे, मुहलुकान आदि | वहीँ संस्कृत के शब्दावली में देवी देवताओं का वर्चस्व था तो शिव के ही २००० नाम है, विष्णु के १६००, इंद्रा के ४५०...
५. Loan words कैसे लोकमानस में कुछ परिवर्तनों के बाद प्रचलित होते हैं इसके कुछ उदाहरण :
- Box से बाक्स, बकसा , Honorary Magistrate से अनेरिया मजीस्टेट, Royal से ‘रावल’ और फिर ‘राऊर’, अरबी ‘फज्र’ से ‘फजिले’, फ़ारसी ‘खिश्म’ से ‘खीस’ (क्रोध), तुर्की ‘बुलाक’ से बुलाकी, पुर्तगाली ‘balde’ से बाल्टी |
- ‘चट-चट’ की आवाज़ से चटकी (चप्पल), फट-फट की आवाज़ से फटफटिया (मोटरसाइकिल), छू-छू की आवाज़ से छुछुनर (चूहा)|
६. Huns और उज्बेकों के आगमन पर नस्लभेदी विशेषणों का प्रचलन : ‘हुन्हड़ा’ जोकि लुटेरे या दबंग व्यक्ति का पर्याय है और ‘उजबक’ जो की मूर्ख का ! ईरानियों के प्रति दृष्टिकोण बदलने से देवतावाची ‘असुर’ का पर्याय ‘राक्षस हो गया |
७. समाज में जैसे जैसे वर्ग भेद और उंच नीच की जटिलताएं गहराने लगती हैं, भाषा में भी स्तर भेदक अभिव्यक्तियाँ कायम होने लगती हैं | जैसे अंग्रेजी में मध्यम पुरुष के लिए दो शब्द हैं : Thou और You, संस्कृत में ‘त्वं’, ‘भवत’, वहीँ मुंडा भाषाओँ में कोई नहीं | सांथाली में आदर के लिए अलग सर्वनाम नहीं है, तो क्या आदिम समाज ज्यादा समतामूलक था ?

Excerpts from Gulshan Bawra's talk with Kamal Sharma from Vividh Bharati archives. Aired on 11/07/2015, 10.30 PM. Bawra sahab was a lyricist of yesteryear and also acted in a few films in minor roles.

He recalls his days in pre-partition India, while also playing some rather rare vintage songs in this talk
